About Mechanicville, New York

Mechanicville is a city of 5,163 people in Saratoga County, on the west bank of the Hudson River where the Anthony Kill flows in. By 1721 Cornelius Van Buren was running a sawmill at the creek's mouth. The name, first recorded in 1829, came from the settlers' trades: they were millers, carpenters and butchers, skilled work that people then called the mechanical arts.

Boats on the Champlain Canal began stopping at the settlement in 1823, and the Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad laid its track through in 1835, so goods and travelers began to change hands here. Mechanicville became a village in 1859 with about 1,000 people, then grew quickly once a linen thread company, textile mills and other factories set up shop. More railroads arrived in 1878, papermaking took hold, and the village became a city in 1915.

  • Lincoln's friend, buried hereElmer E. Ellsworth was a friend of Abraham Lincoln and had clerked in his law office. As a Union colonel leading the Fire Zouaves, he became the first conspicuous casualty of the Civil War, and he was buried in Mechanicville's Hudson View Cemetery in 1861. A large eagle tops his memorial, and the Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth Monument and Grave is on the National Register.
  • Power from the Hudson since 1898Robert Newton King built a hydroelectric plant on the Hudson here in 1898. It has never stopped running, and no hydroelectric plant in the country has operated longer without a break. In 1932 Mechanicville became one end of the first experimental high-voltage direct-current line in the U.S., which ran to Schenectady.
  • The world's largest paper millBy 1900 Mechanicville was a major railroad transfer yard and car repair center, and from 1904 it was home to the largest paper mill in the world. In the 1920s the city held nearly 10,000 people. As the railroads declined, the city declined with them, and the paper mill shut down in 1971.
  • The tornado of 1998On May 31, 1998, an F3 tornado with winds estimated at 200 MPH hit Mechanicville and neighboring Stillwater. It badly damaged the old industrial district along the river, knocked down one of two historic smokestacks that could be seen from two miles away, and wiped out houses on the Viall Avenue hill. The second smokestack and its building were bulldozed in 2005.
