About Hudson Bend, Texas
Hudson Bend is a community of 4,005 people in Travis County, 16 miles northwest of Austin on the shore of Lake Travis. Wiley Hudson, born in 1825, brought his family here from Arkansas in the early 1850s, and in 1854 he received a land grant beside a curve in the Colorado River. That curve took the family's name, and so did the farming settlement that grew up around it.
In the early 1940s workers built Marshall Ford Dam, known today as Mansfield Dam, and its waters formed Lake Travis. The project cost the Hudson Bend community nearly half of its acreage, and a cemetery had to be moved to Teck.
- Three fords across the ColoradoThe early settlers used three fords to get across the Colorado River. They carried their corn over to be ground at Anderson Mill, and they crossed to see neighbors in Round Mountain, Nameless and other settlements close by. A state historical marker placed in 1978 tells their story.
- Forty percent waterLake Travis now covers 2.7 of the 6.7 square miles in the Hudson Bend census area, or 40.27 percent. The remaining 4.0 square miles are land.
- A library born in schoolThe Lake Travis Community Library, which serves Hudson Bend, began in 1985 at Lake Travis High School. In May 2004 local voters agreed to create a library district. Haythem Dawlett donated land for a building in March 2011, and the library moved into its new home in Lakeway in February 2013.
