About Hudson, Illinois
Hudson is a village in McLean County with roots in an 1830s colony settlement near Havens' Grove. Horatio Petit laid out the town on August 13, 1836, and the arrival of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1854 supported further development. The 2020 census recorded 1,753 residents.
- Colonial BeginningsThe Illinois Land Association created Hudson as a colony whose participants pooled funds and received town lots, farmland, and timber acreage.
- Distinctive Town PlanHudson's 1836 plan omitted a central public square and placed larger out lots around its core blocks.
- Broadway's Broad DesignBroadway was planned as the main street at 120 feet wide, while the town's other streets measured 80 feet.
- Railroad TransformationAfter the railroad arrived in 1854, business expanded and a commercial district formed on the town's western side.
- Historic HousesThe Gildersleeve House and Hubbard House received historic register listings in 1977 and 1979, respectively.
