About Isle Au Haut, Maine

In 1604, the French explorer Samuel de Champlain named the island Isle au Haut, or High Island. Ten years later, the English captain John Smith charted the coast. He noted it was the tallest island in Penobscot Bay. The town split from Deer Isle in 1874.

Merchant's Island in Isle au Haut was named for Anthony Merchant, the first settler in the town. He lived on that island until he died. Douglass's Cove was named for Robert Douglass, who lived beside it until he left for Nauvoo, Illinois, as a Mormon convert.

  • Island life far from the mainlandLife on Isle au Haut stayed old-fashioned for a long time. Electricity did not reach the island until 1970. Telephone service came in 1988. Lobster fishing is still the main work there, and Acadia National Park covers about 60 percent of the island.
