About Stonington, Maine

Stonington began around 1800 as Green's Landing, a small village on the rocky southern shore of Deer Isle. Its people turned to shipbuilding, fishing and lobstering. In 1897 the Maine Legislature set the village off as its own town. It was named Stonington for its granite quarries.
