About Jasper, Florida

Jasper is a city of 3,621 people and the county seat of Hamilton County, in the North Florida lowlands. Settlers came in large numbers from 1827 through the 1840s, most of them from Georgia and South Carolina. In 1840 the settlement still went by two names, Pulaski and Wall. Daniel Bell, the county judge in 1828 and often counted as the county's first settler, liked neither one. Legend says he talked it over with friends, among them the Revolutionary War veteran Simon Whitehurst, and sent the name Jasper to Tallahassee. A post office opened under that name in 1841, and town leaders made Jasper official on March 2, 1858.

The original townsite lay about a mile south of the present one. After the Savannah, Florida and Western railway was finished in 1865, with its depot a mile north of the center, homes and stores shifted toward the tracks, and today's town took shape along the line. Turpentine, tobacco, cotton and pine lumber drove a boom from 1890 to 1930, and in the 1920s more than 2,000 people lived here. Most of Jasper's buildings date from those years. Interstate 75, finished in the late 1950s, later carried tourists and freight past the city, and phosphate mining became one of its largest industries.

  • Named for Sergeant JasperThe town's name honors William Jasper, a sergeant in the Revolutionary War. At Fort Moultrie in 1776, a British shell knocked down the flagstaff. Jasper grabbed the South Carolina flag, rigged up a new staff and kept the flag flying while the guns kept firing.
  • The Jasper Blues in 1861When the Civil War began in 1861, men from Jasper and the rest of the county formed the Jasper Blues, Company I of the 2nd Infantry. They gathered west of Jacksonville and rode the train north, reaching Virginia the same day the First Battle of Manassas was fought. The company later served in Stonewall Jackson's First Corps of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.
  • Lillian Smith, born 1897Jasper is the birthplace of the writer Lillian Smith, who arrived on December 12, 1897. Her father ran turpentine mills here until he lost them in 1915, and the family left for Clayton, Georgia. She grew into a social critic who fought segregation and Jim Crow, and Strange Fruit, the novel she published in 1944, became a best seller.
  • The old county jailMost of Jasper's early records were lost in several courthouse fires in the late 1800s. The Old Hamilton County Jail on Northeast 1st Avenue has been on the National Register since 1983, and today it is home to the Hamilton County Historical Museum.
