About Jemison, Alabama

Jemison is a city of 2,642 people in northern Chilton County, between Birmingham and Montgomery. It grew up beside a stagecoach road linking those two cities. In the 1840s Col. Robert Jemison Jr., who became one of Alabama's richest men before the Civil War, started the first stagecoach line based in the town. In the 1860s travelers called the place Langston Station or Langstonville, after the inn that R. J. Langston kept there.

The South and North Railroad opened a station here in 1870, and its engineer, John T. Milner, proposed naming the town for Robert Jemison. A post office followed in 1871 and a depot in 1872. The railroad made Jemison a market where nearby farmers sold their cotton and produce, and the town was incorporated in 1907. Its charter later lapsed, so it was incorporated again in 1919.

  • Called Jamison until 1888A spelling mistake by the U.S. Post Office left the town known as Jamison until 1888. Two years later, in 1890, some residents campaigned to rename it Bristol, but the effort failed and Jemison kept its name.
  • A railroad stopped by warWork on the railroad through this area began in February 1854, but the Civil War halted it and the line was destroyed. Once trains finally ran through in 1870, the town began to grow, and the line later became part of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad.
  • A lumber town in 1910Jemison counted 450 people in 1880 and only 245 in 1900, then climbed back to 413 by 1910. A state history from that time said its main industries were tied to lumbering. The town sits at 710 feet, about 10 miles northwest of Clanton.
  • Alabama's center of populationThe state's center of population lies just outside the city, in an area known as Jemison Division.
  • MayFest every springJemison MayFest fills the first weekend of May with live music, food and product vendors and entertainment for children. In early December the city holds a Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony.
