About Judith Gap, Montana

Judith Gap is a city of 110 people in Wheatland County. It takes its name from the pass it sits in, a small opening between the Big Snowy Mountains and the Little Belt Mountains that divides Central Montana from the southern part of the state.

When the railroad came through, its station here was first called Ubet, after the nearby stage stop settlement that A. R. Barrows had started. The town now carries the name of the gap, which, like the Judith River and the mountains of the same name, honors Julia (Judith) Hancock, the woman Capt. William Clark was engaged to marry.

“Before the World War the gravel benches around Judith Gap produced wheat that won prizes at big expositions; the few surviving old-time farmers wonder why such wheat has never grown since then.”
Montana: A State Guide Book, 1939
  • Montana's first wind farmIn 2005 builders put up the Judith Gap Wind Farm south of town to catch the steady wind that pours through the pass. Its 90 turbines stand on the land between Judith Gap and Harlowton and have a nameplate capacity of 135 MW. It was the first wind farm installed anywhere in Montana, and it lifted the town's economic prospects.
  • Chief Joseph's path in 1877Settlers and Native Americans have used the gap as a route for centuries. In 1877 Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce passed through it on their flight toward Canada.
  • Home of the TigersJudith Gap School teaches students from preschool through 12th grade, and its teams play as the Tigers. In 2023 the school joined Harlowton and Ryegate in a co-op for high school sports.
