About Kennesaw State University, Georgia
The Georgia Board of Regents chartered the school on October 9, 1963. It opened in the fall of 1966 as Kennesaw Junior College, with 1,014 students. Horace Sturgis served as its first president. The school became a four-year college in 1976 and earned university status in 1996.
In 1981, Betty Siegel took office as the second president of Kennesaw College. No woman had led a school in Georgia's state university system before her. By 1985, the college had begun its first graduate programs, in business and education.
- The Owls' championship yearsIn 1996, Kennesaw State's baseball and softball teams both won NCAA Division II national titles. The women's soccer team won its own Division II title in 2003, and men's basketball followed in 2004. The Owls joined the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2005.
