About Keyes, California

Keyes is a community of 5,672 people in Stanislaus County, part of the Modesto metropolitan area and about 4 miles southeast of Ceres. It grew up around a stop on the Southern Pacific railroad, and the station got its name about 1897. That name most likely honors Thomas J. Keyes, a former state senator for Stanislaus County who had died in 1895.

  • A senator's name, about 1897Thomas J. Keyes served Stanislaus County in the California State Senate from 1871 to 1874. He died in 1895. When the Southern Pacific named its station here about 1897, it most likely did so in his memory, and the community that grew around the station has carried his name ever since.
  • Volunteer firefighters since 1943The Keyes Fire Department has protected the town and the farms around it since 1943, and it is still run entirely by volunteers. About 17 members, five captains, six engineers and six firefighters, train every Wednesday night and on the last Saturday of each month. They also answer calls for help from neighboring departments.
