About Kimberly, Alabama
Kimberly is a city of 3,841 people in north-central Jefferson County. It grew up around a stagecoach station that opened in the 1830s and stayed in use until 1865, when the settlement went by the name Kennelsville. Later it was called Jefferson, probably for the Old Jefferson coal mine close by, and that name lasted until the late 1880s.
In 1888 the post office moved away to nearby Morris. Because another Alabama town already used the name Jefferson, residents voted in 1905 to rename their town Kimberly, and by 1910 about 900 people lived there. Coal mining gave most of them work through the 1940s, until the mines shut one after another in the 1950s.
- Firebrick for forty yearsBesides the coal mines, the town's other big employer was the Dixie Firebrick Company, started in the 1930s. A. P. Green Refractories Company later bought the plant, which closed sometime in the mid-1970s.
- Incorporated in 1952Kimberly became an incorporated town in 1952. A fire at city hall in 1989 destroyed many of its records and much of its written history. The town then grew from 1,801 people in 2000 to 2,711 in 2010, so under Alabama law it began operating as a city on June 29, 2011.
- Down Home Southern FestivalEach March, Kimberly holds the Down Home Southern Festival, three days of vendors, food and music. In early September the city follows with its Fall Festival and Labor Day celebration.
- Home of Mortimer Jordan HighBryan Elementary, North Jefferson Middle and Mortimer Jordan High schools all stand in Kimberly. The middle and high schools draw students from Kimberly, Warrior, Morris, Trafford and parts of far northern Gardendale.
