About Klickitat, Washington

The town and its rail stop were first called Wrights, after an early settler. Another station downstream was named for the Klickitat people. Later the nearby Klickitat Pop beverage company grew famous, and the railroad swapped the two signs. The post office officially took the name Klickitat on February 7, 1910.

The first settlers came in 1890 to homestead, and plentiful timber drew more in the early 1900s. A rail line up the Klickitat canyon was finished in 1903. The first major lumber mill formed in 1909. It was the main employer in town until it closed for good in 1994.

  • Mineral springs and dry ice plantKlickitat Mineral Springs, just east of town, gave naturally carbonated water. The springs gave rise to health spas and a beverage company. They also fed a big dry ice plant that ran until 1957.
