About Kyle, Texas

Kyle is a city of 45,697 people in Hays County, on Interstate 35 between San Marcos and Austin. Jay Gould's International-Great Northern Railroad first planned to run its line to Mountain City, but a straight track from Austin to San Marcos cost less. That track crossed land owned by Fergus Kyle and David E. Moore. On July 24, 1880, they deeded 200 acres to the railroad for a townsite, and the new town took Kyle's name.

The Texas Land Company laid out the streets, and the first lots sold at auction on September 25 under a tree now known as the Auction Oak. The railroad gave buyers from Austin free rides and food. Families and shops soon moved over from Mountain City and Blanco, and Tom Martin opened the first business, a saloon and meat market. By 1882 more than 500 people lived in Kyle, and it became an incorporated city in 1928.

  • A town run by womenIn 1937 voters wrote in the name of Mary Kyle Hartson, the daughter of Fergus Kyle, and made her mayor. She won again in 1944 and led a city council made up entirely of women. In the early 1940s Kyle was known as the one town in Texas whose whole government was female.
  • Katherine Anne Porter's hometownThe Pulitzer Prize winning writer Katherine Anne Porter grew up in Kyle from 1892 to 1901, and many of her best known stories, including "Noon Wine," take place in and around the town. Her childhood house joined the National Register in 2004. It now serves as a residence for writers, and the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center brings visiting authors here to read.
  • Pie Capital of TexasKyle set out to become the state's pie capital, and starting in 2017 it held the Pie in the Sky Hot Air Balloon Festival each Labor Day weekend, with sunrise launches and evening balloon glows at Lake Kyle. The state granted the title on June 8, 2021. The city council ended the festival in 2024, citing its cost and the weather.
