About LaGrange, New York
LaGrange is a town of 15,975 people in Dutchess County, in the Hudson Valley. It was created in 1821 out of land that had belonged to Beekman and Fishkill, and its first name was Freedom. That name soon caused confusion, because Cattaraugus County already had a town called Freedom, settled ten years before and set up a year earlier. To end the mix-ups, the town changed its name to LaGrange in 1828.
- Named for Lafayette's estateWhen the town gave up the name Freedom in 1828, it chose LaGrange, the name of the Marquis de Lafayette's estate. Locals say it lə-GRAYNJ.
- Arthursburg and LaGrangevilleArthursburg, a hamlet on the southern town line, is named for Chester A. Arthur, the twenty-first president of the United States. LaGrangeville, in the southeast, is the largest part of the town, and in 2014 it was home to 8,221 people.
- Swimming at Freedom ParkFreedom Park is the biggest park the town owns. Its small lake is fed by a spring, and swimmers use it under the eye of Red Cross-trained lifeguards. Eight 25-yard lap lanes let the town field a swim team, and the park also has a bandstand, an open-air pavilion and a summer day camp.
