About Union Vale, New York
Union Vale is a town of 4,558 people in Dutchess County, about 15 miles east of Poughkeepsie. Its land was once part of the Beekman Patent, and the first settlers arrived around 1716. More than a century later, in 1827, Union Vale became a town of its own, made from pieces of Beekman and LaGrange.
The town covers 37.8 square miles. Its highest point is the top of Clove Mountain, 1,400 feet above sea level, just west of the hamlet of Clove. Its other hamlets include Verbank, near the northern town line, and LaGrangeville, in the southwest corner, which Union Vale shares with LaGrange and Beekman.
- Oswego, the Quaker CityOswego was a hamlet in the northwest part of town, just southeast of today's Sky Acres Airport. The state gazetteer also calls it Quaker City. The hamlet later became a ghost town, and its ground is now part of Moores Mills, which Union Vale shares with LaGrange. A state historic marker stands at the site, and the Oswego Meeting House and Friends' Cemetery joined the National Register in 1989.
- New York's largest town parkTymor Park covers nearly 500 acres, more than any other municipal park in New York State. Besides sports fields, an outdoor pool and tennis courts, it holds an equestrian center, camping areas, a fishing pond, a senior center, historical sites and more than 12 miles of trails for hiking, biking and riding.
- Camp Sprout Lake, 1976Young Judaea opened Camp Sprout Lake in Verbank in 1976. The camp was set up for children in grades 2 to 8, with a focus on Jewish and Zionist education.
