About Lake Cherokee, Texas

Lake Cherokee is a community of 2,980 people in Rusk and Gregg counties, built around a reservoir on Cherokee Bayou, a stream that flows east into the Sabine River. Homes ring the shoreline, and the Cherokee Water Company owns the lake, which supplies water to towns, industry and boaters.

The lake began as a civic project in nearby Longview. Vern A. Clements, who led Longview National Bank, began recruiting local leaders in 1946, among them Carl Estes, the city's mayor and publisher of the Longview Morning Journal. Their effort, known as Operation Bootstrap, drew so much interest that the developers raised the number of lots from 750 to 1,500.

  • Lots drawn, stakes drownedThe new lots were handed out by drawing. As the reservoir filled, water covered some of the stakes that marked their corners, and years passed before most of the property lines were settled.
  • Fishing from New Year's Day 1950Before anglers were allowed on the water, more than 1.5 million fish were stocked to join the species already living there. Fishing opened on New Year's Day 1950, and largemouth bass, channel and blue catfish, white crappie and bluegill all swim in the lake.
  • 68,700 acre-feet of waterThe dam across Cherokee Bayou lets the lake store 68,700 acre-feet. The upper half of the lake lies wholly in Rusk County, while the county line with Gregg follows the middle of its lower half.
