About Lake George, Colorado

Lake George began in 1891 as a stop on the Colorado Midland Railway. George Frost built the nearby lake to supply ice to the railroad. It was first called George's Lake, and the name flipped when the post office opened. Winter ice was cut there and shipped to Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek.

  • Ranch brands at the trading postIn 1941 Lake George was the center of a large potato-growing area. Brands from ranches across the region were burned into the door jamb of the Cattlemen Trading Post.
