About Westcreek, Colorado
Westcreek is a community of 120 people in southwestern Douglas County, in the valley of West Creek. The creek runs north into Horse Creek and belongs to the South Platte River watershed. State Highway 67 follows the valley through town, reaching Deckers 9 miles to the north and Woodland Park 15 miles to the southeast.
- A gold rush in 1895In 1895 a small trace of gold turned up in the valley, and the news drew a crowd almost overnight. About five thousand people soon packed the valley, living in tents and rough shacks while they hunted for gold.
- Pemberton became West CreekBefore the rush, the settlement here was called Pemberton. During the boom it was renamed West Creek, and rancher Hiram Abbey divided his ranch into town lots.
