About Lakewood, New Jersey

Lakewood is a township of 135,158 people in Ocean County, built around Lake Carasaljo. Sawmill workers were the first Europeans known to settle here, starting around 1750, and a mill at the east end of the lake went by the name Three Partners Mill from at least 1789. Jesse Richards smelted local bog iron at Washington Furnace from 1815 to 1818, and in 1833 Joseph W. Brick reopened the works as Bergen Iron Works.

The settlement took the name Bricksburg in 1865, but later developers wanted a name that suited their plans for a resort. Residents weighed Brightwood against Lakewood, and in March 1880 the Postal Service approved Lakewood, a name chosen to point to the lakes and pine forests. Hotels such as the Laurel House, opened in 1880, drew wealthy winter visitors, and the township was incorporated from parts of Brick Township on March 23, 1892.

  • Carrie, Sally and JoLake Carasaljo was named in 1865 for Joseph W. Brick's three daughters, Caroline, Sarah and Josephine, by joining their nicknames. The sister lake, Manetta, carries the name of his wife. People made all four of the township's lakes. Carasaljo, Manetta and Shenandoah lie along the South Branch of the Metedeconk River, while Lake Waddill sits on Kettle Creek.
  • Grover Cleveland's wintersPromoters in the 1890s said Lakewood's winters ran about ten degrees warmer than New York City's, though Weather Bureau records never showed it, and The New York Times gave the town's society a weekly column. Grover Cleveland wintered in a cottage near the Lakewood Hotel in 1891 to 1892 and again in 1892 to 1893, commuting to New York. In 1909 the cottage joined a children's tuberculosis preventorium. Hotels lasted into the 1950s before steep decline in the 1960s.
  • Gould and Rockefeller estatesGeorge Jay Gould bought an estate on Lake Carasaljo in 1896, and in 1924 the Sisters of Mercy moved their college, Georgian Court, onto it. The campus became a National Historic Landmark in 1985. John D. Rockefeller bought land here in 1902 and spent springs and falls in Lakewood until 1937. On August 27, 1940, his estate opened to the public as Ocean County Park.
  • A yeshiva of 14 studentsIn 1943 Rabbi Aharon Kotler opened Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood with 14 students. It became the biggest yeshiva anywhere outside Israel, and its enrollment has passed 6,500 students, who study mainly the Talmud and Jewish law.
  • The Strand on Clifton AvenueThomas W. Lamb designed the Strand Theater, which opened on Clifton Avenue in 1922. Early in their careers, Burns and Allen, Milton Berle and Ray Bolger all played its stage.
