About Leisure Village East, New Jersey
Leisure Village East is a census-designated place of 4,189 people in Lakewood Township, Ocean County, and it was planned from the start as a home for retirees. Robert J. Schmertz, a New Jersey builder, put it up through Leisure Technology Corporation, a company he had founded himself.
Schmertz had already opened his first such project, Leisure Village in Lakewood, in 1963, and it was the first adult community anywhere in New Jersey. Its chain-link fence around the grounds and its guarded front gate became trademarks of the Leisure name. Leisure Village East followed as his second retirement community.
- Built by a Celtics ownerThe man behind Leisure Village East also put his money into professional sports. In a 1974 court affidavit, Schmertz said he had bought the Boston Celtics with a loan of 4 million dollars, and that he owned 60 percent of the stock in the hockey club called the New England Whalers, which played in the World Hockey League.
- One of three Leisure VillagesLeisure Village East shares its name with two neighbors nearby, Leisure Village and Leisure Village West. All three are active adult communities with similar names.
