About Lakewood, Ohio
Lakewood is a city of 50,942 people in Cuyahoga County, on the south shore of Lake Erie about 6 miles west of downtown Cleveland. Ottawa, Potawatomi, Wyandot, Shawnee and other nations lived here until the Treaty of Fort Industry pushed them west in 1805. Surveyors laid out the land as Rockport Township in 1806, and on April 4, 1807, six men led by Judson Canfield bought it from the Connecticut Land Company for $26,084. James Nicholson came from Connecticut in 1818 as the first permanent settler, and by 1819 the township held 18 families.
Settlers built along Detroit Avenue, a toll plank road from 1848 to 1901, and their farms, orchards and vineyards ran north to the lake. The village was incorporated in 1889 and named for its place on the lakefront. Streetcar lines from Cleveland followed on Detroit Avenue in 1893, Clifton Boulevard in 1903 and Madison Avenue in 1916, and Lakewood grew into one of Cleveland's streetcar suburbs.
- From farm to lakefront parkJohn Honam built his stone house in 1834 on a farm that ran from Detroit Road to Lake Erie between Belle and Cook Avenues. That land later became The Hickories, Robert Russell Rhodes's estate. In 1919 the city purchased it and made the grounds Lakewood Park. During the flu epidemic the mansion served the hospital as extra space, and it was City Hall until 1959. Honam's house, restored by the Lakewood Historical Society, is now the Oldest Stone House Museum.
- BirdtownIn the 1890s a neighborhood went up in the southeast corner of Lakewood for workers at the nearby National Carbon Company. Most of its eight streets carry bird names, among them Robin, Lark, Quail, Thrush and Plover, and many of the first houses were boarding houses. Birdtown became a National Register historic district in 2006.
- Electric cars by 1906Two early automakers got their start in Lakewood: Winton Motor Carriage Company, founded in 1897, and Baker Motor Vehicle, founded in 1899. By 1906 Baker had grown into the largest maker of electric vehicles in the world.
- Johnny Appleseed in ceramicThe Lakewood Civic Auditorium opened in 1955 on the Lakewood High School campus with 2,000 seats, and the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival played there from 1962 to 1981. Its facade carries Early Settler by Viktor Schreckengost, the largest free-standing ceramic sculpture in the world. Most people call it Johnny Appleseed, the figure Schreckengost designed it around.
- The West End staysIn 2002 Mayor Madelaine Cain's administration proposed taking homes in the West End, along the Rocky River Reservation, by eminent domain and replacing them with stores. Residents organized against it and drew national attention from 60 Minutes, and voters defeated the plan in a 2003 referendum.
