About Lanham, Maryland

Lanham is a community of 11,282 people in Prince George's County, Maryland. Its name honors Truman Lanham, a well-off planter from the area, who provided the ground where the Whitfield Chapel congregation built its first chapel in 1837.

The community grew into a railroad town after the Pennsylvania Railroad built its Washington Branch through the area in 1872. Today the New Carrollton station, at the end of the Washington Metro's Orange Line, and an Amtrak station sit just across the Capital Beltway, and Doctors Community Hospital is in Lanham itself.

  • Methodists since 1837The Whitfield Chapel congregation has held services on Truman Lanham's former land since 1837. It raised churches there in 1837, 1885 and 1921. The congregation carries on today as Lanham United Methodist Church, with its old cemetery right beside it.
  • A schoolhouse from about 1861The Bald Hill School went up around 1861, more than a decade before the railroad came. The Bladensburg School District counted three schools before it, and Bald Hill was the first one built in the Lanham area. It also ranks among the oldest schoolhouses in Prince George's County.
  • Home to 2U and Radio OneSeveral companies have their headquarters in Lanham. They include the education technology company 2U, the media company Radio One, the publisher Rowman & Littlefield, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, the software company Vocus and the reverse logistics company Optoro.
