About Springdale, Maryland
Springdale is a community of 5,301 people in Prince George's County, Maryland. It sits about 2 miles south of Lanham and 2 miles west of Mitchellville. Its oldest subdivision, Spring Dale, was laid out in 1947. Work on a second one, Carsondale, began in 1955.
- Spring Dale, platted in 1947In 1947 Scruggs Properties laid out the Spring Dale subdivision. Francis Scruggs was the company's president. The land had been part of an old tract called Landover. Springdale Builders put up the houses over the next ten years and finished in 1957. The neighborhood has 43 single-family homes.
- Carsondale, begun in 1955Carsondale was the first neighborhood in the Washington, D.C., area where African American service members could use a VA loan from the GI Bill to buy a home. Those loans needed no money down and had low interest. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company backed the project, and work began in 1955. The three-bedroom ramblers had oak floors, tiled bathrooms, dining areas and sliding-door closets.
