About Lenox, Massachusetts

Lenox is a town of 5,095 people in Berkshire County, set between a ridge of the Berkshires on the west and the Housatonic River on the east. Mahican people lived along the river first. Fighting in the French and Indian Wars kept English colonists away until 1750, when Jonathan and Sarah Hinsdale came up from Hartford, Connecticut, and opened a small inn and general store.

Josiah Dean bought Lot Number 8, which covered both Lenox and Richmond, for 2,250 pounds. The claims clashed, so the land went to Samuel Brown Jr., who had bought it from the Mahican chief, once he paid 650 pounds more. The tract became Richmond in 1765, but the mountains cut it in half, and in 1767 Yokuntown, a village that took its name from a Native chief, was split off as its own town. It was supposed to be Lennox, probably for the 3rd Duke of Richmond and Lennox, until a clerk dropped one n.

  • County seat from 1784Lenox held the Berkshire County seat from 1784 until Pittsfield took it in 1868. The courthouse went up in 1816, and the Lenox Library, founded in 1856, moved into it in 1874 and is still there. In the 1780s Job Gilbert started making iron at Lenox Dale, a village people also knew as Lenox Furnace, using ore dug from mines cut into a vein that ran beneath the town.
  • Hawthorne's year and a halfThe writer Catharine Sedgwick settled in Lenox in 1821, and the actress Fanny Kemble came after her. Nathaniel Hawthorne brought his family from Salem in 1850 and lived here for a year and a half. In a cottage on the grounds of what became Tanglewood he wrote Tanglewood Tales, the book that later gave the estate its name.
  • An acre for $20,000Samuel Gray Ward of Boston pieced together the first Lenox estate in 1844, and Richard Upjohn designed its Italianate house, Highwood, a year later. From 1880 to 1920 millionaires built huge summer houses here, and the Tub Parade filled Main Street with decorated carriages. By 1903 an acre cost $20,000. The federal income tax of 1913 stopped the building, and the school teams are still called the Millionaires.
  • Edith Wharton's MountEdith Wharton planned both the house and the grounds of The Mount, finished in 1902, and lived there until 1911. She called it her "first real home." The house later served as the home of Shakespeare & Company, and today it is a National Historic Landmark and museum.
  • The symphony's summers since 1937Rosamond Sturgis Brooks and Mary Aspinwall Tappan gave the Tappan family estate, Tanglewood, which reaches partly into Stockbridge. The Boston Symphony Orchestra moved its summer festival there in 1937, and the orchestra has spent every summer since on the grounds.
