About Pittsfield, Massachusetts

Pittsfield is the county seat of Berkshire County, a city of 43,927 people at the spot where the Housatonic River's east and west branches meet. In 1738 Colonel Jacob Wendell of Boston bought 24,000 acres here, a tract called Pontoosuck, hoping to sell it off in pieces. Young militiamen started clearing it in 1743, but fear of attack during King George's War drove them away. Families from Westfield came later, and their village became Pontoosuck Plantation in 1753.

By 1761 the plantation had 200 residents, and that year it was incorporated as a town. Royal Governor Sir Francis Bernard chose its name, honoring the British statesman William Pitt. Mills grew up along the brooks feeding the Housatonic, and after Merino sheep came from Spain in 1807, Pittsfield led the nation in woolen manufacturing for almost a century. It became a city in 1891. General Electric took control of William Stanley Jr.'s electric company in 1903, and by 1930 the city had passed 50,000 people.

“I can never pay my debt to Pittsfield for giving my children their mother, and myself seven blessed seasons, and seventy times seven granaries full of hoarded reminiscences.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes, In olde Massachusetts
  • The elm saved in 1790In 1790 the town picked a spot for its new meeting house, and a tall elm the first settlers had spared was set to be cut. The axe had already struck it when Mrs. Williams stepped between the blade and the tree. Her husband, John Chandler Williams, who owned the house beside the square, then gave the town land for a common, now the park.
  • Moby-Dick at ArrowheadIn 1850 Herman Melville bought Arrowhead, a farm of 160 acres, and lived there twelve years, farming and writing. Oliver Wendell Holmes, descended from Jacob Wendell, built a summer home east of town and spent seven summers in Pittsfield.
  • Baseball since 1791A 1791 bylaw banned "baseball" closer than 80 yards to the town's new meeting house, and in 2004 a librarian turned up that record at the Berkshire Athenaeum. Here in 1859, Amherst defeated Williams 73 to 32 in the first intercollegiate game. Frank Grant, a Pittsfield native born in 1865, ranked among his century's great players and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.
  • A president thrown in 1902On September 3, 1902, a trolley struck the carriage carrying President Theodore Roosevelt through Pittsfield. Roosevelt and Governor Winthrop Murray Crane were thrown into the street, and bodyguard William Craig was killed, the first Secret Service agent to die guarding a president. The motorman, Euclid Madden, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and served six months in jail.
  • Music on South MountainIn 1918 Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge built South Mountain Concert Hall on her estate for chamber music, framing it with timbers from an old textile mill and filling it with church pews. Works by Bartók, Stravinsky, Ravel and Schoenberg were first performed there.
