About Richmond, Massachusetts

Micah Mudge and Ichabod Wood first settled Richmond in 1759. Mudge came up the Housatonic River from Connecticut, while Wood came from Rehoboth. About three miles of thick wilderness lay between their homes. The two men are thought not to have met until after their first winter.

The land of Richmond and Lenox was bought from two sachems, Yokun and Ephraim. Two villages grew up on either side of the ridge now called Yokun Ridge. They joined as one town, Richmont, in 1765. The ridge made contact hard, so the eastern village split off as Lenox in 1767.

  • Local industryRichmond was mostly a farm town until iron ore was found there in 1829. The discovery led to an iron works that lasted into the twentieth century.
