About Lighthouse Point, Florida

Lighthouse Point is a city of 10,486 people in the northeast corner of Broward County, bordered by Deerfield Beach on the north and Pompano Beach on the west and south. Its name comes from the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, which rises on the far side of the Intracoastal Waterway, in the town of Hillsboro Beach.

The city grew up along canals dug during the 1950s and 1960s, so a great many of its homes sit on the water, and boating and fishing caught on. From the Hillsboro Inlet, Bimini lies 40 miles away by boat and Grand Bahama lies 60 miles away. North Broward Preparatory School was founded here in 1957 before it moved away.

  • A speakeasy on a bargeIn 1928 Cap Knight and partner Albert Hasis hauled a dredging barge onto a peninsula between Lake Placid and the Intracoastal, then set a restaurant on the barge's base. Its name was Club Unique, but people called it Cap's Place, a speakeasy and gambling room during Prohibition. Until 1953 guests parked in Hillsboro Beach and flashed their headlights until someone rowed across.
  • Hosts from a lighthouse familyCap Knight, born in 1871 at or near the Canaveral lighthouse to a family of Florida lighthouse keepers, was among the first settlers around Hillsboro Beach. His wife, Lola, who taught at Hillsboro Inlet, often greeted diners with bare feet, wearing a plain cotton dress along with a diamond necklace. Sylvester Love started washing dishes there in 1940 and became the chef. Winston Churchill dined in the yellow room.
  • A library raised by a ballThe library began in 1965 in one small room at the Beacon Light Shopping Center, given rent free. On March 30 a Library Ball, underwritten by the Lighthouse Point Bank, raised over $5,000, and a ball was held each year through 1971. Loans climbed from 314 books in 1965 to more than 10,000 by 1968.
