About Pompano Beach, Florida

Pompano Beach is a city of 112,046 people in Broward County, on the Atlantic coast just north of Fort Lauderdale. The Tequesta lived here long before any settlers, and a few homesteaders had come by the mid-1880s. Lasting settlement followed the railroad, whose first train pulled into the small settlement on February 22, 1896. George Butler and Frank Sheen came with their families to work for the railway and stayed. Sheen is said to have named the place for the Florida pompano after eating one for dinner and writing its name on his survey.

Within eight years Pompano sat in three counties. It was in Dade County when it was incorporated as the Town of Pompano on July 3, 1908, with John R. Mizell as its first mayor, and it ended up in Broward County, created in 1915 with its northern line at the Hillsboro Canal. The town grew in the 1920s land boom and again after World War II. In 1947 it joined a new town on the beach to form the City of Pompano Beach, which counted 5,682 people in 1950.

  • The Kester cottagesIn the 1930s William L. Kester put up perhaps 150 little white cottages in Pompano and priced each one at $950. The four suits from a deck of cards decorated their shutters. Today two of the cottages hold the Pompano Beach Historical Museum in Founders Park.
  • Blanche and Joseph ElyBlanche and Joseph Ely were teachers who led the city's Black community. Blanche Ely High School carries her name, and the couple's home is now the Ely Educational Museum.
  • Esther Rolle's first EmmyEsther Rolle was born in Pompano Beach in 1920 to parents from the Bahamas, and she graduated from Blanche Ely High School. The actress known for Good Times won the first Emmy ever given in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie; Pompano Beach later named a street for her.
  • Spring training, 1961 to 1986Before 2008, Pompano Beach Municipal Stadium stood on the ground of today's Pompano Beach Community Park. The Washington Senators held spring training there from 1961 to 1971, and the Texas Rangers followed from 1972 through 1986.
  • A Navy field turned blimp baseThe Pompano Beach Airpark started out as a landing field for the Navy in World War II. In 1958 the city sold 60 acres of it to make way for the Pompano Square Mall, and today the field is home base for the Goodyear Blimp Spirit of Innovation.
