About Linneus, Maine

Two Boston men, Dr. Aaron Dexter and merchant Ebenezer Preble, bought the township with money paid to Harvard College. The college asked them to call it Linneus, and the deed was dated August 9, 1810. In 1828 United States troops cut the Soldier road through the town to supply the garrison at Houlton.

Col. Moses Burleigh came to Linneus from Palermo in 1833. Right after he arrived, he was named to take the census of the Aroostook settlements. The land was then in dispute, and a Provincial warden tried to arrest him. Burleigh escaped and finished the count.

  • The name and the Harvard tieThe town carries the name of Carl Linnaeus. In 1833 Massachusetts sold half of the township to raise money for a botany professorship at Harvard College.
