About Litchfield, Minnesota
Litchfield is a city and the county seat of Meeker County, with 6,624 residents counted in the 2020 census. Rail service began with a construction train in August 1869, and the town site was laid out that same year. The city's record also includes an agricultural economy, Lake Ripley, and several buildings recognized for their historical importance.
- From Ness to LitchfieldSettlers adopted Ness in 1858, but a later vote favored Litchfield, and the township was chartered as a village on February 29, 1872.
- Railroad ArrivalThe first train to reach the community was a construction train that arrived on August 13, 1869.
- Lake Within the CityThe city boundaries encompass all of Lake Ripley, a natural lake southwest of central Litchfield.
- Veterans' HallFounded by Civil War veterans in 1885, the Grand Army of the Republic Hall joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
- Historic Opera HouseBuilt in 1900, the Litchfield Opera House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
