About Lithonia, Georgia

Lithonia is a city of 2,662 people in eastern DeKalb County, 18 miles east of downtown Atlanta. It started in 1805 as a small crossroads where farmers lived, and its name comes from lithos, the Greek word for stone. When the Atlanta Augusta Railroad reached the settlement in 1845, the granite quarries nearby gained a way to ship their rock, and the quarrying business took off.

The Georgia Railroad and the Atlanta, Stone Mountain & Lithonia Railway both hauled stone from the quarries. Builders in town used the local granite and gneiss for the plain brick and stone stores along Main Street and for many of the houses around them. Today some of those old quarries are parks, and some of the rail lines have become trails.

  • A town built on gneissThe rock under Lithonia is a metamorphic stone known as Lithonia gneiss. The granite of nearby Stone Mountain formed later and pushed up into the older gneiss. Lithonia is also a gateway to the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area.
  • Lithonia Lighting, 1946Lithonia Lighting was founded in the city in 1946. It moved to nearby Conyers in the 1950s and grew into one of North America's largest makers of light fixtures for homes, offices, schools and factories.
  • Two schools on Bruce StreetThe town's historic district counts the history of its Black residents among the reasons it matters. Bruce Street holds what is left of a 1938 school built for African-American children, along with the equalization school that replaced it on the same street in about 1953.
  • Smokey and the BanditLithonia was a filming location for Smokey and the Bandit in 1977, starring Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jackie Gleason and Jerry Reed. In 2024 Childish Gambino released a song named for the city, "Lithonia."
