About Livingston, Tennessee

Livingston is a town of 3,905 people and the seat of Overton County, about 15 miles north by northeast of Cookeville. The land for the town, forty acres, was bought on August 10, 1833, for two hundred dollars. That same year Overton County voters settled a close and disputed election by choosing to shift the county seat away from the town of Monroe.

The change was finished in 1835, at a time when fewer travelers were passing through Monroe. From then on, county business came to Livingston, and the young town grew up around its courthouse.

  • Named for Edward LivingstonThe town takes its name from Edward Livingston, who lived from 1764 to 1836. He was President Andrew Jackson's Secretary of State, the member of the cabinet in charge of the nation's foreign affairs.
  • A governor's law officeAlbert H. Roberts practiced law in Livingston and also worked at the Alpine Institute, a private Presbyterian mission school in Overton County, before he became Governor of Tennessee. His law office in town joined the National Register in 1975, and the local elementary school, A.H. Roberts Elementary, carries his name.
  • The Overton County CourthouseOnce the county seat settled here in 1835, Livingston became the place where Overton County kept its records and held court. The Overton County Courthouse joined the National Register in 1980.
  • One high school since 1984The nearby Rickman community ran a high school of its own until 1984. That year the schools were consolidated, and every high school student in the area went to Livingston Academy instead. Rickman then became a bedroom community for people who worked in Livingston or Cookeville.
  • First woman mayor in 2024Lori Elder Burnette took office as mayor on August 29, 2024, the first woman to lead Livingston.
