About Lorton, Virginia

Lorton is a community of 20,072 people in southern Fairfax County, between Alexandria and Fredericksburg. Before the area had its own name, Colchester was its place of business. The leading families of the day gathered at Pohick Church, where George Washington and George Mason at times served on the vestry.

The name came from England. Joseph Plaskett had lived in the village of Lorton, in the Lake District of Cumbria. He settled in this part of the county and ran a general store, and on November 11, 1875, he opened a post office there under the name Lorton Valley. The new post office name stuck, and the community has been called Lorton ever since.

  • Suffragists jailed in 1917From the early 20th century until November 2001, the District of Columbia ran a prison here called the Lorton Reformatory. From June to December 1917 it held about 168 women from the suffrage movement in the Washington area. A short line, the Lorton and Occoquan Railroad, once ran from the prison to Occoquan. For the 2010 census, the land around the old prison became part of Laurel Hill.
  • A Nike missile siteLorton got a Nike missile site in 1955. It stayed in place for nearly two decades and was gone by 1973.
  • Where the Auto Train startsLorton is the northern end of Amtrak's Auto Train, which carries travelers and their cars without a stop to Sanford, Florida, near Orlando. The Auto Train station sits a mile south of the Lorton VRE station, where commuter trains run to Washington Union Station and Fredericksburg.
  • Olympic gold and a CEOTrevor Stewart, who won gold and bronze in track and field at the 2020 Summer Olympics, comes from Lorton. So do Andi Sullivan, who plays soccer for the Washington Spirit and the U.S. women's national team, and Carly Fiorina, who led Hewlett-Packard as CEO from 1999 to 2005.
