About Laurel Hill, Virginia

Laurel Hill is a community of 8,307 people in southern Fairfax County, about 19 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., on the Prince William County line. Most of its land once belonged to the grounds of the Lorton Reformatory, a prison. After the prison closed, Fairfax County bought the property in 2002 and rebuilt it as a new suburban neighborhood. The area was counted as part of Lorton until it became a census-designated place under its own name.

  • Named for an old houseThe community borrowed its name from Laurel Hill House, a building from the 18th century. It was first the home of William Lindsay, a patriot of the Revolutionary War. Generations later, the superintendent of the Lorton Reformatory lived there.
  • Suffragists jailed nearby in 1917From June to December 1917, the District of Columbia held scores of women suffragists in the nearby Occoquan Workhouse. They had been arrested after they picketed the White House to demand the vote.
