About Ravensworth, Virginia
Ravensworth is a community of 2,680 people in eastern Fairfax County, bounded by Braddock Road, the Capital Beltway, Accotink Creek and Lake Accotink. It takes its name from the Ravensworth land grant, which William Fitzhugh bought in 1685. Most of what is now Braddock District lay inside that grant, and the Fitzhugh family turned it into one of Northern Virginia's biggest tobacco plantations.
- Mansion lost in 1926The Ravensworth manor house burned on August 1, 1926, and no one ever explained the fire. In the early 1960s builders put up the Ravensworth Farm subdivision and a shopping center in a ring around the spot where the mansion had stood, and the new neighborhood kept the plantation's name.
- Robert E. Lee's honeymoonLater generations of the Fitzhugh family were friends of Robert E. Lee, and he spent his honeymoon at Ravensworth. When the Civil War began, his wife found shelter at the plantation.
- Home of EnscoThe company Ensco keeps its corporate headquarters inside Ravensworth, even though its mailing address reads Springfield. Fairfax County Public Schools also runs Ravensworth Elementary School here.
