About Lugoff, South Carolina
Lugoff is a community of 9,990 people in Kershaw County, 5 miles southwest of Camden, the county seat, and 2.5 miles west of the Wateree River. It began as a stop on the railroad, one of several Kershaw County towns that grew from railroad stops, along with Bethune, Cassatt, Westville and Blaney, which later became Elgin. The census counted 7,434 people here in 2010, and the number had climbed to 9,990 by 2020.
- Named for a Russian countLugoff, said LEW-gof, takes its name from Count Lugoff, a Russian engineer who helped build the Seaboard Air Line Railway in 1899. The line put a station here, and the community grew up around that stop.
- The Lights of LugoffEach Christmas season, people line the roads for the Lights of Lugoff Christmas Parade, the community's holiday tradition.
- Linked with ElginLugoff and its neighbor Elgin, the old railroad stop of Blaney, share Lugoff-Elgin Middle School and Lugoff-Elgin High School in the Kershaw County School District. One newspaper, the West Wateree Chronicle, covers both towns.
