About Lumberton, New Mexico

Lumberton is a community of 70 people in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, and U.S. Route 64 runs through it. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad built its San Juan Extension through this area in 1882. About 1894 a lumberman named E.M. Biggs bought 40 acres out of Francisco Lobato's ranch and laid out a townsite there.

  • Named for its sawmillsBiggs built sawmills on his new townsite, and the town took its name from them. He also laid logging railroads running north and south into the forests. When the marketable timber ran out, those lines were pulled up, the last of them by 1928.
  • A post office from 1894Lumberton's post office opened in 1894, the same year Biggs laid out the town. It served the community for a century before closing on January 28, 1995.
  • The railroad left in 1969The Denver & Rio Grande line that came through in 1882 kept running long after the logging railroads were gone. It closed in 1969, and its tracks were taken up.
