About Ensenada, New Mexico
Ensenada is a community of 107 people in Rio Arriba County, beside the East Fork of the Chama River, a stream some people call the Rio Brazos. The village sits 2 miles upstream from Las Nutritas and the same distance east of Los Ojos.
Ensenada and Las Nutritas, the village now called Tierra Amarilla, were founded at the same time. Neither one grew much in its early years, and both villages began to prosper only around 1870, decades before Ensenada opened a post office of its own.
- Once written EncinadaA 1985 National Register study of the historic places around Tierra Amarilla recorded the village under the name Encinada, which it translated as The Oak.
- A post office, 1906 to 1958Ensenada had a post office of its own from 1906 until 1958. Today the village's children attend the Chama Valley Independent Schools.
