About Canjilon, New Mexico

Canjilon is a village of 228 people in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, along State Road 115. Low hills curve around it on the west and south, and the land climbs slowly toward the north and east.

Hispanic families first settled Canjilon in 1870, a late start compared with much of New Mexico. Like other Hispanic settlers of that era, they came looking for two things at once: land they could farm, and safety from raids by native tribes.

  • 35 families by 1880Settlement began in 1870, and within ten years the village had taken root. By 1880, 35 families were living in Canjilon.
  • A post office since 1892Canjilon got its own post office in 1892, about two decades after the first families arrived. It still serves the village today under the ZIP code 87515.
