About Madisonville, Tennessee
Madisonville is a city of 5,132 people and the county seat of Monroe County, in East Tennessee, with the Unicoi Mountains rising to the southeast. Before any town stood here, this was the site of a Cherokee village called Tellico. The Calhoun Treaty and the Hiwassee Purchase of 1819 opened the land to white settlers, and Monroe County was formed that same year.
The new county needed a seat of government, so a town was founded here in the early 1820s and given the old Cherokee name, Tellico. Residents later petitioned to rename it for President James Madison, and state representative James Madison Greenway presented their request. The name changed to Madisonville in 1830, and the town was incorporated on May 16, 1850.
- A courthouse from 1897The Monroe County Courthouse, finished in 1897, still towers over the historic town square. Baumann Brothers and Company of Knoxville designed it in the Classical Revival style, and it joined the National Register in 1995.
- A second railroad lineWhile the new courthouse was going up, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was planning a line between Atlanta and Knoxville that would pass straight through Madisonville. That line gave Monroe County its second major railroad.
- The Masons of Tellico LodgeThe town's Masons kept its first name alive in Tellico Lodge. One of its leaders, a strict Presbyterian, ran the lodge for twenty years and was so devoted to doing things by the rules of the order that he missed its regular meeting only four times in all that time.
- Sequoyah High since 1995Madisonville High School and Vonore High School merged in 1995 to form Sequoyah High School, which now serves Madisonville students through the Monroe County Schools System.
