About Sweetwater, Tennessee

Sweetwater is a city of 6,312 people in Monroe County, the largest city in that county, with a small piece reaching into McMinn County. It sits in a valley among the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, along Sweetwater Creek, and a local legend says the name came from the way early settlers described the springs nearby.

The town grew in the 1850s after Isaac Lenoir, a local politician who lived from 1807 to 1875, began selling lots here. His father founded Lenoir City, a short distance to the northeast. Its place on the railroad made Sweetwater valuable during the Civil War, and in mid- to late 1863 it served the Confederacy as a key supply depot. Sweetwater was officially incorporated as a town in 1875.

  • The Lost SeaThe Craighead Caverns at Sweetwater hold the Lost Sea, which is the largest underground lake in the United States.
  • Sweetwater ValleySweetwater Creek runs northeast for several miles and empties into Watts Bar Lake, an impoundment of the Tennessee River. Over time its waters carved out the lowland known as Sweetwater Valley, ringed by low hills and farmland.
  • Farms, hosiery and stovesIn 1989 most of Sweetwater's economy still rested on agriculture business. Some light industry worked alongside the farms: a hosiery mill, a plant that made stoves and a factory producing chemicals.
  • A Japanese school, 1989 to 2007The campus of the former Tennessee Military Institute found a new use in 1989, when Tennessee Meiji Gakuin High School opened there. The school stayed in Sweetwater until 2007.
