About Malaga, New Mexico
Malaga is a community of 112 people in Eddy County, about 18 miles southeast of Carlsbad along the Pecos Highway, with the Pecos River flowing two miles to the east. Swiss immigrants founded the settlement in the 1890s, and in its early years it was known as Kirkwell.
The founders needed hands to work the land, so they recruited Italian laborers to farm the area. Many of those workers chose to stay, and their families settled in Malaga for good. The town grew into a farming place in the Pecos valley, with U.S. Route 285 running through it.
- A name from SpainKirkwell was renamed Malaga after the Spanish city of Málaga. A 1962 guide to New Mexico explained the name another way, saying it came from the Malaga wine grapes that had once grown here in great numbers.
- Italian farm familiesThe Swiss founders brought Italian laborers to farm the land around the settlement. Many of them made their homes here, and they became part of the community from its first years.
- Two cotton ginsBy 1962 the grape vines were long gone, and Malaga served as a trading point for the farmers and ranchers around it. Alfalfa and cotton were its main crops, and the town had two cotton gins to process the harvest.
