About Whites City, New Mexico
Whites City, also spelled White's City, is an unincorporated community of 14 people in Eddy County, close to Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Charlie L. White started it in the 1920s as a commercial resort for people coming to see the caverns, and in 1928 the townsite was plotted on land he had homesteaded where Walnut Canyon opens onto the plain. The White family has managed the place ever since it was founded.
- Plotted in 1928Charlie White claimed a 120 acre homestead at the mouth of Walnut Canyon. In 1928 that land was plotted as a town, and the new settlement carried his name.
- Built for cave visitorsWhites City grew up to serve travelers on their way to Carlsbad Caverns. Its general store, hotel, gas station and RV park all cater to the crowds headed up to the national park.
- Where three highways meetU.S. Routes 62 and 180 pass through the community, and so does New Mexico State Road 7, the Carlsbad Caverns Highway, which climbs from here to the caverns.
- ZIP code 88268Though only 14 people lived here at the 2020 census, Whites City has its own post office with the ZIP code 88268. Its children attend the Carlsbad Municipal School District, which runs Carlsbad High School.
