About Manchester, Washington

Manchester is a community of 5,714 people in Kitsap County, on the west shore of Puget Sound about 10 miles from downtown Seattle. It was settled in the 1860s under the name Brooklyn, after the New York borough, and in 1892 it was renamed for Manchester, England. Travelers could reach it overland through Shelton, Allyn and Belfair, but Seattle, the biggest city in the region, lay across the water and could only be reached by boat.

A permanent dock went up in 1908, and steamboats began regular runs to Colby, Southworth, Harper and Seattle. In May 1923 the Kitsap County commissioners called a special election for June 7, 1923, on creating the Port of Manchester, whose job would be to build a car ferry dock. Starting in 1925, a ferry ran across the Sound to Alki Point in West Seattle. That dock washed away in 1936, and the boats shifted to Colman Dock on the Seattle waterfront, but service stopped the same year and never came back. The port went on to keep a dock, a boat ramp, a park and parking lots for local people and pleasure boaters.

  • The Navy's fuel depotThe U.S. War Department used land at Manchester for Puget Sound's defenses as early as 1889. Part of the old land now holds Manchester State Park and labs for the EPA and NOAA.
  • A library saved in 1954In 1953 Manchester's library was set to be torn down. Residents rallied, and a new library was built in 1954. It was renovated and enlarged in 2021, with solar panels added to cut its energy bills. The Friends of the Manchester Library raise money with Father's Day salmon bakes, a Christmas tree lighting, summer farmers' markets and plant sales.
  • Colby, named for coalColby, one of the smaller communities inside Manchester, owes its name to a find made about 1884, when lumps of coal turned up along a small creek. Locals began calling the spot Coal Bay, and over time the name was shortened to Colby, as Edmond S. Meany recorded in 1918.
