About Navy Yard City, Washington

Navy Yard City is a community of 2,759 people in Kitsap County, on Sinclair Inlet across the water from Port Orchard. It grew up after the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard opened at Bremerton, one of several small settlements whose founders hoped to profit from the boom the shipyard was expected to bring. The town was platted in 1909, and by 1913 it had a school of its own.

Bremerton made several attempts to annex the community, and each time Navy Yard City held out. The city now wraps around it on the north, east and west, yet the community has stayed unincorporated, with Sinclair Inlet along its southern edge.

  • A neighborhood club in 1932Late in 1932, residents formed the West Side Improvement Club under the motto "A Bigger and Better Neighborhood." Its first goals were better roads and utilities, above all bringing water lines to more of the community's homes. At first the members met in the local elementary school or at the Bremerton Booster Clubhouse.
  • A clubhouse built by volunteersIn June 1933 the club bought 18 lots for a clubhouse of its own. Volunteers and the Works Progress Administration broke ground in the spring of 1934 and finished the building in June 1937, with an event hall and a playfield on the grounds. It still stands, and it still hosts club meetings, bingo nights and potlucks.
  • Army headquarters in wartimeDuring World War II the Army's 202nd Coast Artillery used the clubhouse as its regimental headquarters while the regiment guarded the Navy installations around Bremerton.
