About Parkwood, Washington
Parkwood is a community of 7,635 people in Kitsap County, about 2 miles southeast of Port Orchard. Its neighborhood of Retsil is home to the state veterans home, which took in its first members on February 22, 1910. The day had been chosen for the formal dedication, and the home was ready on time.
- Lister spelled backwardIn 1916, while Lister was governor, the post office at the veterans home was officially given the name Retsil. The new name was simply the governor's own name turned around, and Retsil has been the name of this part of Parkwood ever since.
- Camped on the beach in 1910Some veterans who had applied to the home moved in before it opened, setting up tents and shanties on a stretch of beach across the road. On February 22, 1910, C. D. Rowley rose early so he would be at the front of the line, and he became the first man admitted.
