About Manzano, New Mexico
Manzano is a small Hispanic village of 26 people in Torrance County, and it counts as part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The village covers 1.7 square miles of land, and its children attend Mountainair Public Schools.
Manzano is the Spanish word for apple tree. The village shares that name with the Manzano Mountains that rise around it, and both names are thought to come from the same apple orchards.
- Orchards from the early 1600sThe National Park Service says Franciscan priests probably planted the orchards that gave Manzano its name, sometime in the early 1600s. The trees growing there now are younger, dating from the 1800s or later.
- New Mexico's center of populationThe center of population for the whole state of New Mexico falls in Manzano, even though the village itself counted just 26 residents in the 2020 census.
- Near the Quarai RuinsThe Quarai Ruins, one of the sites of Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, lie close to the village.
