About Tajique, New Mexico

Tajique is a community of 106 people in Torrance County, part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. It began as a pueblo of the Tiwa people, and no one knows when they first settled here. One account traces the name to the Tiwa word Tush-yit-yay.

Early in the 17th century, the pueblo became the seat of the San Miguel Mission. The Tiwa village held on for decades after that, until Apache raids drove its people away for good.

“Tajique is probably phonetic Spanish for the Tiwa Taskike, name of the pueblo that once was here and of which nothing now remains but a mound.”
WPA Guide to New Mexico, 1962
  • Abandoned in 1675An Apache raid in 1674 drove the people of Quarai pueblo from their homes, and they moved to Tajique. Their arrival doubled the pueblo's population to more than 600. The next year, in 1675, another Apache raid forced everyone to leave, and the pueblo was abandoned.
  • Two wildfires in 2008In April 2008 the Trigo Fire threatened the area. It came close to Tajique, charred 13,709 acres and burned 59 homes. That June the Big Spring Fire forced the whole community to evacuate. It burned 5,478 acres, and in Tajique it destroyed six homes and 10 outbuildings.
