About Punta de Agua, New Mexico

Punta de Agua is a community of 68 people in Torrance County, first listed as a census-designated place before the 2020 census. It lies 7 miles northwest of Mountainair on State Road 55, near the eastern base of the Manzano Mountains, and the road runs on another 5 miles to Manzano. The ruins of Quarai, with its 17th century mission church, stand at the village's southwest edge.

“The springs in the cottonwood grove furnish the water supply for Punta de Agua, which owes its name to them.”
Leading Facts of New Mexican History, 1917
  • The ruins of QuaraiAbout a mile west of the village, at the foot of the Manzano Mountains, lie the ruins of Quarai. The site holds a small prehistoric settlement, a large Tiwa pueblo from the 17th century, a small church from that era and a large mission church. Today the ruins belong to Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument as its Quarai unit, inside the southwest corner of Punta de Agua.
  • From the mission to the villageMembers of the Lucero family returned to Quarai in the 1840s and put up new buildings there, among them a torreon southeast of the old mission. Miguel Lucero sold the land to Bernabe Salas in 1872, but Salas did not stay long. By 1882 he had abandoned the Lucero buildings and settled in Punta de Agua.
