About Marlin, Texas
Marlin is a city of 5,462 people and the seat of Falls County, four miles east of the Brazos River. When the legislature created the county on January 28, 1850, it made Viesca the seat. Residents wanted to choose for themselves, and on January 21, 1851, they picked a site called Adams, close to where Dr. Allensworth Adams lived. On March 22, 1851, the commissioners renamed the place for John Marlin, once alcalde of Robertson County, and his son-in-law Samuel A. Blain laid out the lots around a square.
The first courthouse was a log cabin that also held school, church services, political meetings and dances. Marlin was incorporated in 1867, and the Houston and Texas Central Railway arrived in 1871. Its depot stood on the east side of town, so stores spread east from the square along Live Oak Street, and within a decade the population grew from 500 to 1,500.
“I met a man in Dallas, who told me he left his crutches at Marlin; that he went there suffering with rheumatism.”
- Hot water in 1892In 1891 the city sold $25,000 in bonds to drill an artesian well, and in 1892 it struck hot mineral water. Dr. J. W. Cook spread word of Marlin as a place to come for health, the first bathhouse opened in 1895, and the Bethesda and Majestic followed. For about fifty years visitors taking the cure drove the economy. After World War II and penicillin's arrival the trade faded, and most bathhouses had closed by the late 1960s.
- Big league spring trainingMild weather, the hot baths and train service to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio drew four major league clubs here between 1904 and 1918: the New York Giants, the Cincinnati Reds, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox. Ted Sullivan picked the town for the White Sox, who trained here in March 1904. The Cardinals came in 1905 and went to the baths every afternoon after practice. Players lodged at the Arlington Hotel.
- Conrad Hilton's towerConrad Hilton began a hotel here in 1929, and it opened on May 27, 1930. It cost $375,000, and local people and businesses put up $50,000 of that. With nine floors and 110 rooms it is still the tallest building in Marlin, and a tunnel once linked it to the Marlin Sanitarium Bathhouse across Coleman Street. Hilton sold it in the 1930s, and it later became the Falls Hotel before it stopped taking guests in the late 1960s.
- A clinic for children, 1925Dr. Frank H. Shaw opened a clinic in 1925 to treat and rehabilitate disabled children, among them young patients with polio and arthritis. He put the hot mineral water to work in a swimming pool along with other therapy to build up their muscles. The hospital closed after World War II.
- Courthouses lost to fire and stormIn 1854 the county replaced its log courthouse with a $5,000 white building whose door was chrome yellow and whose shutters were dark green. It burned in 1875, and the brick courthouse built next was badly damaged by a storm in 1886. Architect Eugene T. Heiner designed its replacement, which was later declared unsafe, so the present Falls County Courthouse went up in 1938-39. It joined the National Register in 2000.
